How to put your own brand on a bag of coffee

Most people who write to us are asking the same thing: can we buy coffee from you to sell in our shop. The answer is yes. But there is a second thing we can do that hardly anyone asks about, and it is usually the better deal for them.

We can put your name on the bag instead of ours.

What private label actually means

You pick the coffee. We roast it, pack it and put your brand on the front. The only thing on that bag that stays ours is a line saying who roasted it. It arrives ready to sell, so it goes straight onto your shelf or into your online store.

It is a house coffee with your own name on it, without buying a roaster, hiring anyone, or learning to roast.

Why it is worth more than buying stock

A bag with our name on it is a product you resell. A bag with your name on it is a product you own. When somebody likes it, they come back to you for it, not to us. And when a customer asks where you get your coffee, you get to tell them the story.

Once a bag with your brand on it is sitting in someone's kitchen every morning, that is a level of loyalty most small businesses never get to buy.

The parts people ask about

What does it cost to start

The minimum order is $150 and we invoice net 30. Samples are free, so you taste it before you commit to anything.

The design work is the part that surprises people. I do the branding for you at no charge. Send a logo if you have one, and if you do not, I will draw it up and show you how it looks on a real bag. There is no limit on how many rounds we go. What you pay for is the labels.

What sizes

The standard three are 12 oz, 2 lb and 5 lb, the same bags we use ourselves. Twelve ounce bags are what most shops put on a shelf. Five pound bags are what a busy kitchen actually wants, and a standing order of those solves the problem for a lot of places. If you want a size outside those three, tell me what you need and I will get it priced for you. It only needs a little more lead time.

What coffee goes in it

Any of the ten we roast: Honduras, Ethiopia Yirgacheffe, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Tanzania Peaberry Plus, Brazil, our Espresso Blend, Half-Caffeine or Decaf. If you want a blend of your own, tell me what you are after and I will build it to your spec. Our own Espresso Blend is four origins put together here, so this is normal work for us.

And if you have a coffee in mind that we do not carry at all, we will bring it in for you.

How long it takes

Once you confirm the order it is ready within a week. Standing orders need a week's notice to change or skip.

Who this works for

The last account I signed was a French restaurant. They wanted their coffee ground for French press so they could serve it at the table and sell the same bag by the door, and a customer could go home and make that exact cup again. We worked through it together until it was right.

I have done the same for a Mexican restaurant. I have also done it for people who just wanted their own name on a bag at Christmas, for family, as gifts. It does not have to be a business.

Cafes, restaurants, offices, churches, schools, hotels, bed and breakfasts, fundraisers, events. If you are not sure whether you count, ask anyway. The answer is usually yes.

Where to start

Tell me what you serve and roughly how much you go through, and I will send you samples. There is no cost and no obligation on either side until you say the order is on.
