One

Ordering and shipping

The written policy is at our shipping policy, and there's more detail on shipping and delivery.

How much is shipping?

A flat $8.00 anywhere in the US, however much you buy. At $35 or more it's free, and exactly $35 counts.

One 2 lb bag clears it on its own, and so do two 12 oz bags. The Trio ships free.

In Belmond it's free — see do you deliver in Belmond. Outside the US? See do you ship to me.

Link to this answer

Do you ship to me?

Almost certainly. Every US address, including Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands and APO/FPO addresses.

Overseas too. There are set rates for Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. Everywhere else falls under a rest-of-the-world rate.

Carrier rates — USPS, DHL Express or FedEx — show at checkout before you pay. Free shipping is a US thing only.

If your address doesn't come up at checkout, email thegoldenhopperllc@gmail.com and we'll look.

Link to this answer

How soon does my order go out?

Most orders leave within a day or two. We do not sit on inventory for months.

You'll get an email when the order comes in, and another with a tracking number the moment it goes out.

After that it's the carrier's part. USPS usually takes 2 to 5 days across the country — that's what we normally see. Your tracking number is the thing that knows the actual date.

Do you deliver in Belmond?

Yes, and it's free. Free local delivery sits at checkout as a shipping option, the same as any other. Pick it and it costs nothing.

There are no rules on it. No minimum order, no cutoff time, no part of town that misses out. One bag or ten, any Belmond address, free.

Nothing to arrange, nobody to call first: the same coffee we mail across the country, brought to your door for nothing.

It is for orders off the website — bags, mugs, t-shirts. Drinks from the café are a counter job — and if you want a few of them, or want them at a set time, call the shop on (641) 384-4163 and we will have them ready.

If the option doesn't come up when you check out, email thegoldenhopperllc@gmail.com or call (515) 408-2748.

Link to this answer

Can I order online and pick it up at the shop?

The website ships it or delivers it rather than holding it at the counter. If you want an order put together and held for you, email us and we will sort it out. Drinks are different — call the shop on (641) 384-4163 and we will have them ready.

In Belmond you don't need pickup anyway — choose free local delivery instead.

You don't need an order to visit, either. Walk in during open hours and buy a bag off the shelf.

Link to this answer

Do you have a coffee subscription?

Yes. Every coffee on the site has Subscribe and save on its own product page, right beside the one-off price. Pick how often you want it and the discount comes off every delivery:

  • Every 2 weeks — 15% off
  • Every 4 weeks — 10% off
  • Every 6 weeks — 5% off

The Espresso Bean Chocolates can go on a schedule too. The terms are in the subscription policy.

Link to this answer

Do you sell gift cards?

Yes, in the shop. Come in to 231 E Main St and we will sort you out. There is no gift card on the website yet.

Send coffee instead. The Trio is the easiest call: three bags, free shipping, nobody has to guess. For somebody who knows what they like, a 2 lb bag is the better gift. All the bundles are here.

Two

The coffee itself

Browse the whole lineup in the coffee collection.

Where does your coffee come from?

Honduras, Ethiopia, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Tanzania and Brazil.

Honduras is the one we know best. We went down there, walked the farms and met the growers. We buy direct from the Hacia el Futuro co-op, above premium market price.

Every coffee has its own product page with the tasting notes and where it came from.

More of that story is on the about page.

Who roasts it, and where?

We do, at 231 E Main St in Belmond — the same room you buy the coffee in. Our roaster is a Mill City drum and it sits right behind the counter, in full view of everybody who walks in.

Every batch is roasted by hand and dialed in for that particular bean, and every bag is hand-packed there too. Nothing gets trucked in from somewhere else with our name put on it.

It started in 2018 with a cast iron pan on a grill in Ankeny, then a 1 kg drum roaster in a garage and every farmers market we could find. The whole story is on the about page.

Link to this answer

Is your coffee fair trade?

Not certified, no. None of our coffees carry a formal label — no Fair Trade seal, no organic seal.

What we have instead is direct trade. Our Honduras comes straight from the Hacia el Futuro co-op, and we'd rather tell you exactly who we buy from than point at a sticker.

What's the difference between your medium and your dark?

Most of what we bag is medium: Honduras, Ethiopia Yirgacheffe, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Tanzania Peaberry Plus, the Espresso Blend and the Decaf. Medium is our sweet spot.

On the darker side, Brazil is smooth, low acid and naturally sweet, with milk chocolate and caramel. Half-Caffeine is dark too.

Two shortcuts: all the medium roasts and all the dark roasts. For what a roast level does to a bean, the Coffee Lab has an explainer.

Link to this answer

Which one should I start with?

One bag: Honduras. Medium, sweet and fruit-forward with a soft berry note, and the coffee we have the closest relationship with.

Coffee with milk, or something easy and low acid: Brazil.

Can't pick: The Trio gives you three at once.

Rather be told: there's a coffee quiz linked from our home page.

Link to this answer

Do you have decaf?

Yes. Our Decaf is a Colombian Huila, decaffeinated with the natural Ethyl Acetate process, roasted medium. Warm malt and brown sugar.

There's also Half-Caffeine if you want to cut back rather than quit — our Espresso Blend and the Colombia decaf blended together, roasted dark. Smooth chocolate, bright citrus.

What is a peaberry?

A coffee cherry normally grows two seeds pressed flat against each other. That flat side is why an ordinary bean has a crease down the middle.

In roughly one cherry in twenty, only one seed develops. With nothing pressed against it, it grows round instead of flat. That's a peaberry.

They get sorted out after processing, by hand and by screen size: a whole extra step on a small fraction of the crop, which is a good part of why they cost more.

On taste, many roasters find the round shape roasts more evenly, because it tumbles in the drum instead of sitting flat, and comes out sweeter and brighter. That's what roasters find, not something anyone has settled.

Ours is Tanzania Peaberry Plus, roasted medium. Deep blackcurrant, wine-like depth, bright peachy sweetness.

Link to this answer

What's in The Trio?

Three 12 oz bags: Honduras, Ethiopia Yirgacheffe and the Espresso Blend. It's $45 and it ships free — the easiest way to try three at once. See The Trio.

Link to this answer

What's in your espresso blend? Can I use it for drip?

Four origins blended together: Brazil, Honduras, Mexico and Ethiopia. Rich chocolate, smooth caramel, roasted medium.

It's built for espresso, but it makes a good pot of drip coffee too. You don't need an espresso machine to buy it. See the Espresso Blend.

Link to this answer

Do you sell flavored coffee?

No. Nothing in our bagged lineup is flavored. The notes on each bag are what the bean does on its own once it's roasted right.

Link to this answer

Are the same coffees always available? Do you have a light roast?

We keep a core lineup and rotate single origins through alongside it, so the lineup isn't always identical. If a coffee you liked is gone, ask us.

There's no light roast on the store at the moment. Everything we bag today is medium or dark.

Link to this answer

How much coffee is in a bag?

Three sizes, and every coffee comes in all three:

  • 12 oz — $19.00
  • 2 lb — $43.00
  • 5 lb — $80.00

The price is the same across the whole range, so the rare coffees cost no more than the everyday ones.

The 5 lb bag is usually the right one for an office, a church or a restaurant. If you need more than that regularly, see wholesale.

Link to this answer

What do you sell besides coffee?

Also in other goods and apparel. The shop shelves carry a few things the website doesn't — see can I buy bags at the shop.

Is the granola gluten free? What about the baked goods?

We don't call anything here gluten free, and we won't. The sign in the shop, word for word:

“Our gluten friendly items are made with gluten free ingredients. However, items are processed in a facility that contains flour. Because equipment is not specifically designated for gluten free items, they cannot be deemed celiac safe.”

So: gluten friendly, not celiac safe.

The whole ingredient list for the Good-For-You Granola is oats, almonds, walnuts, maple syrup, olive oil, flax seed, vanilla extract, cinnamon and salt. There's no wheat in it. It contains nuts.

If you're managing a real allergy, email thegoldenhopperllc@gmail.com or call (641) 384-4163 first, so we can check rather than guess.

Three

Grind, storage and freshness

The Coffee Lab has a Find Your Grind tool and a brew-method guide. This is the practical stuff about the bag.

Is it whole bean or ground? Can you grind it for me?

Either — you choose. Every coffee has a Whole Bean and a Ground option on its product page, in all three sizes, at the same price. Pick before you add to cart.

Whole bean keeps its flavor longer, so take that if you have a grinder. Ground isn't a compromise; it just wants using sooner.

And we'll grind it however you need it: espresso, drip, pour over, French press, cold brew, a commercial urn. Any grind, made to order. Choose Ground, then put the brew method in the special requests box when you add the bag to your cart.

Link to this answer

How fresh is it, and how long will a bag stay good?

We roast in small batches by hand and pack by hand. We do not sit on inventory for months. Your order ships as fresh as we can possibly make it.

You don't have to take our word for it. The roast date is printed on the bag: the actual day that coffee was roasted, so you can judge it yourself. It's the first thing a serious buyer looks for, and the thing most bags on a grocery shelf won't tell you.

Coffee doesn't spoil the way fresh food does. It fades: an old bag goes flat and loses the notes you paid for.

So sooner is better, and whole bean holds on longer than ground. How you keep it matters more than most people expect — see how should I store it.

Link to this answer

How should I store it?

Closed up, at room temperature, out of the sun. A cupboard is fine. The bag it came in is fine.

Air and heat are what get to it. Don't decant it into a clear jar on a sunny windowsill, don't park it next to the stove, and if you freeze it, don't keep pulling the same bag in and out.

Visiting the shop in Belmond

Directions and more about the shop are on the visit page.

Where are you?

231 E Main St, Belmond, Iowa. We opened there in 2020 and haven't moved.

Link to this answer

What are your hours?

Open every day.

  • Monday to Friday: 7AM to 2PM.
  • Saturday and Sunday: 8AM to 2PM.

We've been open every day since 2020 except a couple of holidays.

Link to this answer

Are you open on holidays?

Usually, yes. We're good about being open for at least part of the day on most holidays.

It changes year to year, so the hours for each holiday go up on Facebook beforehand. Any closing or change of hours goes on our Facebook page — check there before you drive over.

Link to this answer

Where do I park?

On the street, right out front. Parking on Main Street is free: no meter to feed, no ticket to buy.

Link to this answer

Is the shop accessible?

Yes. There's handicap parking, the entrance is accessible, and there's an accessible bathroom.

One honest note: the bathroom is tight. It's accessible, it just isn't roomy, and better you hear that from us.

If a trip depends on any of this, call (641) 384-4163 before you set off and we'll tell you straight.

Link to this answer

Can I watch you roast?

Come in and look. It sits right behind the counter, so you can see it from where you order.

Whether it's running while you're stood there depends on the day. Ask at the counter and we'll tell you what's going on that morning. But the machine your bag came out of is right there. Our original roaster, a little red Mill City, is over by the checkout — a long way on from the cast iron pan on a grill this started with in 2018.

Link to this answer

What's on the drink menu?

More than most people expect. Most of the board comes in two sizes, and some of it is seasonal, so take this as what's usually up.

  • Coffee. Latté, breve, mocha — white chocolate, turtle or peppermint — caramel macchiato, americano, espresso, and plain brewed coffee.
  • Frappes. S'mores, Oreo, caramel, turtle, vanilla, thin mint, white mocha, chocolate, marshmallow magic, pumpkin spice.
  • Not coffee. Chai tea, pumpkin oat chai, honey oat matcha, hot chocolate, apple cider, and a frozen hot cocoa.
  • Smoothies. Strawberry Sunrise, Mean Green, Isla'Mango, Tropical Breeze, Berry Blues, strawberry banana.
  • Dessert smoothies. Kiwi-colada, strawberry cream, banana cream, caramel apple, chocolate peanut butter banana, chocolate strawberry cream.
  • Lotus. Plant-based energy, and there are thirty-one, with new ones added often: Blue Lagoon, Strawberry Cream, The Fuzz, Caramel Apple, Area 51, The Pot, Blue Hawaiian, Purple Haze, Green Gummy, Coconut Crusher, Lavish Berry, and more on the board.

Prices are on the boards in the shop.

The black coffee we brew rotates daily. What's in the pot today isn't what was in it yesterday, which is a decent reason to come back.

Link to this answer

Do you have food?

We do. Homemade biscuits and gravy, every morning.

The baking is done in this building: muffins, cinnamon rolls and pecan rolls, coffee cake, cookies and mini cookies, energy bites, and a fruit parfait. Some of it is ours, some of it comes from Crust & Crumb, our shared-kitchen member. What's on the rack changes day to day.

Our Good-For-You Granola is on the same rack, and that one you can order online.

If you're avoiding gluten, read the gluten answer first.

Link to this answer

Do you have oat milk or other non-dairy options?

Yes — oat and almond. If you drink something else at home, call (641) 384-4163 before you come and we'll tell you what we've got in.

Link to this answer

Can I sit down, and is there wifi?

You can. There are a handful of really nice four-person tables, outlets, and wifi.

Link to this answer

Is there a loyalty card?

There is. Ask about the Golden Hopper loyalty card at the counter next time you're in.

Link to this answer

Can I buy bags of beans at the shop?

Yes — the same coffee we mail out, on the shelf on Main Street. Prices are marked, and we run extra sales in person, so there are deals you only get by walking in.

What's out changes. Honduras and the Espresso Blend are almost always there, with at least three others rotating through alongside them. Most of the shelf is already bagged both ground and whole bean. Want one a different way? Ask at the counter — we'll do whatever we can.

There's more on those shelves than coffee, and some of it never makes it onto the website: local honey, a French press, stickers, note cards, and things local people make and sell here.

Driving in for one specific bag? Email thegoldenhopperllc@gmail.com or call (641) 384-4163 first and we'll tell you what we've got.

Black wire shelving inside the shop, filled with rows of white and black Golden Hopper coffee bags, with jars of local honey, packets of espresso bean chocolates, a spinning rack of note cards, mugs and a boxed French press on the lower shelves, and the bakery rack against the red wall beside them.

Five

Big orders

Accounts are open, and the biggest thing on offer is your own bag with your own name on it. There's more on the wholesale page.

Can you make coffee in our own bag, with our name on it?

Yes. Of everything we do, this is the one we'd most like you to know about.

You give us a logo and a name. We make the bags, any size you want. It's your coffee and your brand on the front, and the bag says roasted by The Golden Hopper on it.

That suits a café, a restaurant, an office, a church, a team, a shop that wants its own name on the shelf. And if you want the blend to be yours as well as the bag, custom blends are a yes.

Samples are free, so you can taste it before you commit. The rest of the terms are in the next answer.

Email thegoldenhopperllc@gmail.com with your name, your logo and roughly how much coffee you'd go through, or call Cain direct on (515) 408-2748.

Link to this answer

Do you do wholesale, and what does it cost?

Yes, and we want the business. Accounts are open, and here are the terms plainly:

  • Minimum order, $150. That's the floor to open an account.
  • Samples are free. No charge, no catch.
  • Net 30. We invoice you.
  • Within a week of a confirmed order.
  • Whole bean is what we'd rather send, because it holds its flavor longer. Ground is available on smaller orders, and we'll grind for whatever machine you run.
  • Standing orders, yes. The same order on a schedule, with a week's notice to change one or skip one.
  • Custom blends, yes. And your own bag with your own name on it — that's the answer above.
  • Not only coffee. The espresso bean chocolates and the granola can go on a wholesale order too.

Honduras, Ethiopia and the Espresso Blend are the year-round core of an account. Others come and go, and we'll tell you what's around.

Pricing is quoted per account, because it depends on what you take and how often. Ask, and you'll get a straight answer. And if what you want isn't on that list, ask anyway — we're open to just about any idea, infused coffee included.

Email thegoldenhopperllc@gmail.com with what you're serving and roughly how much you go through, or start on the wholesale page.

Not ready for an account? Every coffee comes in 2 lb at $43.00 and 5 lb at $80.00, whole bean or ground, orderable this minute. Inside the US a bag that size ships free.

Link to this answer

Can you do coffee for an event, or a big local order?

Yes. The answer to most of these is yes — we're open to just about anything, so ask.

  • Brewed coffee for an event.
  • A stack of bags for a group: an office, a church, a team, a wedding.
  • Mugs, tumblers or t-shirts in quantity. There's no bulk size on the store, but we can still do it.
  • An order put together and held here for you to collect.

Email thegoldenhopperllc@gmail.com with what you're after, roughly how many people it's for, and the date if there is one. Or call (515) 408-2748. We usually reply the same day.

Link to this answer

We're running a fundraiser. Can you help?

Yes, and it's simpler than people expect. Collect the orders first, then give us one final count and we'll make it.

Schools, churches, teams, clubs. Email thegoldenhopperllc@gmail.com and tell us what you're raising money for and roughly how many bags you think you'll shift. And if you'd like your group's name on the bag, ask — that's a thing we do.

Six

Returns, problems and getting hold of us

The written policies: refunds, shipping, terms, privacy, contact information.

What if I don't like it? What's your return policy?

Tell us, and you get your money back or a different bag. Your choice, not ours.

You have 30 days from getting your order. Email thegoldenhopperllc@gmail.com and describe what was wrong — "too sharp", "too heavy", "it tastes burnt to me" is plenty. There's nothing to ship back either: coffee is a perishable food product, so we don't ask you to put it in the mail.

We usually reply the same day, and the policy commits us to one business day. Refunds typically show up within 3 to 5 business days once issued, depending on your bank.

That's not a grudging exception, it's the actual refund policy, and that's the version that governs. Tell us what was off and we can usually point you at the bag you should have had.

Link to this answer

Can I change or cancel an order after I place it?

Yes — any time before it ships. Email thegoldenhopperllc@gmail.com with your order number and what you want changed, or call (515) 408-2748. There's no cutoff hour and no fee.

Most orders leave within a day or two, though, so sooner is genuinely better. If it has already gone out, you're still covered — see the return policy.

My order arrived damaged, or it never arrived

Email thegoldenhopperllc@gmail.com with your order number and, if something's broken or split open, a photo. A damaged or wrong bag gets a full refund or a replacement, whichever you'd rather, within the same 30 days. Nothing goes back in the mail.

If it simply never turned up, tell us and we'll chase the tracking with you. There's no waiting period — email whenever it starts looking wrong. Well past the usual 2 to 5 days, or tracking that has stopped moving, is reason enough.

The refund policy and the shipping policy are the written versions.
