The roaster sits behind the counter, in full view, a few feet from where you order. Around it: espresso drinks, frappes, smoothies, Lotus energy drinks, homemade biscuits and gravy, and a bakery case. The Golden Hopper is a small-batch coffee roastery and cafe on Main Street in Belmond, open every day. If you live in town, anything you order from the website is delivered free.

Hours
Open every day
Monday to Friday, 7AM to 2PM.
Saturday and Sunday, 8AM to 2PM.
We have been open every day since 2020, except a couple of holidays. A holiday is usually still a working day here. We are open for most of them, often at least part of the day. It changes year to year, so we post the hours for each one on Facebook before it comes around.
Any closing or change of hours goes up on our Facebook page (opens in a new tab). Check there before a holiday trip.

Behind the counter
The roaster is right there
Our main roaster sits behind the counter at 231 E Main St, in full view of everyone who walks in.
Not a warehouse in another town. Not behind a wall. The bags on the shelf and the bags we mail out came off that machine, in this room, and every one of them was packed by hand here in Belmond.
Whether it is running the minute you walk in depends on the day — roasting fits around everything else a cafe has to do — but it is not hidden, and nobody minds you watching.
There is a second, smaller one
A little red Mill City sample roaster sits out beside the main drum — two machines, both in the room with you. The About page starts this story back in 2018 on a grill in Ankeny, with a cast iron pan and a wooden spoon, which is a fair distance from here.
On the board
What you can order
Coffee drinks are the main thing we do. Here are some of them. Prices are on the boards in the shop.
Espresso and coffee
Latte, breve, caramel macchiato, americano, and espresso on its own, single or double. Mochas in white chocolate, turtle or peppermint. And a pot of brewed black coffee — a different coffee every day.
Frappes
S'mores, Oreo, Caramel, Turtle, Vanilla, Thin Mint, White Mocha, Chocolate, Marshmallow Magic and Pumpkin Spice.
Lotus energy
A plant-based energy drink, and the list is long — thirty-one on the menu, with new ones added often. Blue Lagoon, Strawberry Cream, The Fuzz, Caramel Apple, Area 51, The Pot, Blue Hawaiian, Purple Haze, Green Gummy, Coconut Crusher, Lavish Berry, and plenty more on the board.
Nothing to do with coffee
Chai tea, pumpkin oat chai, honey oat matcha, hot chocolate, apple cider, and a frozen hot coco.
Smoothies
Strawberry Sunrise, Mean Green, Isla'Mango, Tropical Breeze, Berry Blues and Strawberry Banana. Then the dessert ones: Kiwi-Colada, Strawberry Cream, Banana Cream, Caramel Apple, Chocolate PB Banana and Chocolate Strawberry Cream.
Milk, and whatever is seasonal
Oat and almond are our non-dairy milks, on any drink you like. There is usually something seasonal up too, so read the board before you order the usual.
Ordering for more than yourself? Call ahead.
Ring the shop, tell us what you want, and we will have it made and waiting for you. It saves everybody standing at the counter while six drinks go through one at a time.
It works for later in the day as well — tell us what time you want them, a couple of hours ahead if you like, and they will be ready then.
The case
Biscuits and gravy, and the bakery case
Homemade biscuits and gravy, in a coffee shop. We have them every morning.
The rest of it is baked in this building. Muffins, cinnamon and pecan rolls, coffee cake, cookies and mini cookies, energy bites, a fruit parfait. Some of it is ours and some comes from Crust & Crumb, our shared-kitchen member, who bakes here too. What is in the case changes day to day, so if you are coming in for something particular, call the shop and we will tell you what is out.
If you are asking about gluten
Some of what is in the case is gluten friendly. The sign on the door says exactly what we mean by that, and it is worth reading in full:
The sign on the case in the shopOur gluten friendly items are made with gluten free ingredients. However, items are processed in a facility that contains flour. Because equipment is not specifically designated for gluten free items, they cannot be deemed celiac safe.
Gluten friendly, not celiac safe. If you are celiac, please take that seriously — we would rather lose the sale than get this one wrong. Our Good-For-You granola is the same story: no wheat in the recipe, not certified gluten free, and it contains nuts.
Take it with you
Leaving with coffee
Two ways to walk away with a bag: off the shelf here, or from the shop page online, where every coffee comes with notes on how it tastes. The Coffee Lab goes deeper on grind and brewing.
| 12 oz bag | $19.00 |
|---|---|
| 2 lb bag | $43.00 |
| 5 lb bag | $80.00 |
Those are the online prices. Whole bean or ground is your call at checkout, on every coffee and every size, at the same price either way.
What is on the shelf
Yes, we sell bags here, priced on the shelf, and we run extra deals in person you will not find online. What is out changes. Honduras and the Espresso Blend are almost always there, with at least three others rotating alongside them. Medium and dark is where we have the most variety.
More than coffee on the shelves
Local honey, a French press, stickers and note cards. Shirts in several designs, mugs and tumblers. Local people sell their own things here too, so there is usually something on the shelf you will not find anywhere else.
The roast date is on the bag
We print the roast date on the bag. It is the number that actually tells you something about a bag of coffee, and the one most grocery brands leave off the label. Look at it and judge for yourself.
Any grind you need
Espresso, drip, pour over, French press, cold brew, a commercial urn. Tell us what you brew on and that is the grind you get. Most of the shelf is already out in both ground and whole bean; if you want something else, ask. We do not mind.
The Trio
Honduras, Ethiopia and the Espresso Blend together, three 12 oz bags for $45.00. It ships free. See the Trio
Shipped to you
US shipping is $8.00 flat, free once the order reaches $35.00. Most orders leave within a day or two, and USPS usually takes another two to five days. We ship overseas as well, at the rates the carrier quotes at checkout. Shipping and delivery
If you live in Belmond
Order online, we bring it round
Live in Belmond? Pick free delivery at checkout. No minimum, no cutoff.
Order from the online store and, if your address is in Belmond, free local delivery sits right there with the other shipping options. Choose it, pay nothing for shipping, and the coffee comes to your door. One bag or five, any time. There is no phone call to make and nothing to arrange.
It covers whatever you can order on the website — bags, mugs, t-shirts. Drinks from the café are a counter job — and if you want a few of them, or want them at a set time, call the shop on (641) 384-4163 and we will have them ready.
Ordering for a group
Events, big orders, and picking one up
Brewed coffee for an event. A stack of bags for a team, a church or an office. Mugs, tumblers or t-shirts in quantity. An order put aside for you to come and collect. The answer to all of it is yes, or at least ask — we would rather hear the idea than have you assume we cannot do it.
Email thegoldenhopperllc@gmail.com with what you need and roughly when. Any other question, request or idea, send that too.
Run a business — a cafe, a shop, an office, a fundraiser? We take wholesale accounts, and we can put your own name and logo on the bag. That is all on the wholesale page.

Questions we get
Can I change or cancel an order?
Any time before it ships. Email thegoldenhopperllc@gmail.com and tell us what you want changed. Most orders leave within a day or two, so the sooner you write the better. Once it is on its way, it becomes a refund question instead.
What if something is wrong with my order?
We will make it right. You have 30 days from receiving the order. Email thegoldenhopperllc@gmail.com and describe the issue, and you choose: a full refund, or a replacement.
Nothing needs to be shipped back, because coffee is a perishable food product. If a package is late or looks lost, write whenever you like — there is no waiting period to sit through first.
The policy commits to a reply within one business day. Refunds typically appear within three to five business days, depending on your bank. The full policy is on the refund policy page.
Where does the coffee come from?
Seven countries at the moment — Honduras, Ethiopia, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Tanzania and Brazil — with single origins rotating through over time. The Espresso Blend pulls four of them together.
Honduras is the one we know best. It comes direct from the Hacia el Futuro co-op and we pay above premium market price to our partners there. We have been down to walk the farms and meet the growers. The full version is on the About page.

If you cannot get here today
The coffee we mail out comes off the same roaster you can see from the counter, packed by hand here in Belmond. We do not sit on inventory for months. Your order ships as fresh as we can possibly make it.
